Effects of Empowerment on School Adjustment of Adolescents

초록

This study examined effects of empowerment on school adjustment of adolescents. Using a total of 737 students sampled with purposive sampling method, the study tried to answer how different types of indicators (individual factors, family factors, school factors, and three levels of empowerment) were associated with school adjustment of adolescents. A series of analyses(ANOVA, Hierarchical Multiple Regression) were executed to investigate research questions proposed by the study. Findings of hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that levels of aggression and depression in individual factors, family support in family factors, and school environment in school factors were significant indicators for school adjustment, after controlling for effects of demographic characteristics of the respondents. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis, which examined the relative importance of empowerment factor after accounting for influences of other factors in the model, informed us that levels of interpersonal and sociopolitical empowerment of students were significant indicators of school adjustment, even after controlling for other factors of interest(demographics, individual factors, family factors, school factors). When compared with absolute value of beta coefficient, which measures relative importance of the variable on school adjustment, interpersonal empowerment showed the biggest effect on school adjustment, followed by sociopolitical and intrapersonal empowerment. Besides major finding of the study, several implications for social work practice and policy were discussed.
