Between Tradition and Change in the COVID-19 Era- The Royal National Theatre’s Strategic Use of the Internet in 2020

초록

This paper investigates the Royal National Theatre’s adaptation of online streaming services in 2020. Following the declaration of the pandemic, the NT contrived to reach audiences through a different platform. The NT released a series of the NT Live shows on YouTube for a limited period, free of charge. This was followed by the launch of its online streaming platform ‘NT at Home.’ The move from NT Live to NT at Home is noticeable progress in that the NT no longer insists on screening its shows at public places and allows individual viewing without restrictions on time and space. This paper analyzes the meaning of this phenomenon with the aid of McLuhan’s media theory by comparing the nature of operating NT Live with NT at Home. Through this study, the paper invites further analysis of the role of the public theatre in the post-COVID-19 era that the NT represents.
