초록

This study investigates the changes and reconstruction of normative meaning in the modest fashion practices of Southeast Asian Muslim women influencers, Hijabistas, using Mary Douglas’s theory of boundaries and taboos as an analytical framework. To this end, a qualitative content analysis was conducted on 120 Instagram posts from 2023 to 2025 by Indonesian Hijabistas Dian Pelangi and Ria Miranda. The analysis revealed that modest fashion functions as a cultural practice that generates complex identities through Douglas’s theoretical stages: boundary setting and purity, redefinition of anomalies and pollution, and boundary reconstruction. The specific findings are as follows:First, in the boundary setting stage, Dian Pelangi and Ria Miranda upheld the aesthetics of covering, maintaining religious purity and reinforcing cultural belonging through traditional Indonesian dress, family, and community solidarity. Second, in the anomalous stage, Dian Pelangi demonstrated creative possibilities by combining luxury goods and skinny jeans with Islamic clothing to create ‘clash and resistance,’ whereas Ria Miranda emphasized ‘harmony and integration’ by mixing religious fashion with other cultural items, such as the hanbok, and sharing daily fashion practices. Third, in the boundary reconstruction stage, Dian Pelangi used discourses of resistance and achievement to turn fashion into a site of social debate, while Ria Miranda highlighted the practicality of clothing. Thus, Hijabista modest fashion is not merely religious attire but a process of reorganizing boundaries where new social orders emerge. It simultaneously expresses the complex identities of Muslim women and visualizes social messages. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of modest fashion and demonstrates the applicability of Douglas’s theory in contemporary contexts.
