Web-integrated ESOL reading instruction: An idea for reading strategy practice

초록

This study introduces web-integrated activities designed particularly for reading strategy practice. The basic pattern of two theoretically well-supported Internet activities, “Treasure hunts” and “WebQuests,” were employed to develop these activities. The reading strategies that this study attends to are 1) skimming and scanning; 2) locating a main idea and summarizing a paragraph; 3) making inferences and drawing a conclusion; 4) understanding author's tone and purpose. This study indicates the strengths of these web-integrated reading activities as follows. First, they can help learners practice various reading strategies with carefully selected authentic materials. Second, they can fit in any existing language curriculum as either in-class activities or out-of-class assignments, regardless of learners' age or proficiency level. Third, teachers can easily create these activities only with basic computer skills for the purpose of providing extended reading and background information regarding their lesson. It is thus expected that ESOL learners enhance a self-monitoring reading skill, which is necessary for autonomous learning, by training themselves through the reading strategy activities. Several operation tips and web references are also introduced.
