This study analyzes the efficiency of China's logistics industry from 2015 to 2023 using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and panel Tobit regression for 30 provinces. The results showed that the eastern coastal region exhibits the highest efficiency, followed by the central region, northeastern region and the western regions display relatively low efficiency levels. The result of influencing factors, both the full period and the pre COVID 19 period indicate that industrial upgrading and economic development positively affect efficiency, whereas population size exerts a negative influence, and asset investment is statistically insignificant. In contrast, during the COVID 19 pandemic period, all variables become significant. The effect of industrial structure slightly weakens, economic development and population size show weak positive effects, and asset investment negatively affects efficiency. These results reflect differences in regional infrastructure quality, industrial structure, logistics demand. And as well as demand fluctuations and delayed investment returns during the pandemic period. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of strengthening port–inland connectivity, advancing industrial upgrading, improving investment efficiency, and accelerating digital transformation. Based on these findings, the study provides policy implications for promoting the balanced and sustainable development of China's logistics industry.
