A Study on the Relationship between Social Context, Face Threatening Behavior and Apologizing Behavior

초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the method of apology behavior between Korea and China and to examine how this apology behavior correlates with social context and facethreateningacts in China and Korea respectively. Korea and China are geographically close, historically belonging to the Confucian cultural sphere, and have many things in common, such as high-context culture, but it is expected that there will be differences in dialogue as they each step into communism and capitalism. Therefore, this study aims at examining how apology behavior, one of the relatively active conversation types, differs in the two cultures in social context or face threatening acts, and consequently to understand the difference in cultural background and the impact on conversation. The apology speech is closely related to the face-threateningbehavior of speakers and listeners, so it is an appropriate field to grasp these behaviors and there are many differences in the aspects of apology in each cultural circle. In this regard, this study was conducted to observe how the style of apology varies depending on the degree of burden on face threatening acts in various social contexts by means of questionnaires and deep interviews with a group of Korean-Chinese university students. The results of the study are as follows. First, Chinese students were more motivated to apologize if they felt that social decency was threatened than moral decency. However, according to the survey, decency related to morality such as violating the social order was not threatened. On the contrary, although Korean students value social decency, they actively make a sincere apology if moral decency is threatened. Second, Korean students' burden of the severity of the violation and the threat to decency were positively proportional, but Chinese students' burden of the threat to decency was not as great even though they felt the severity of the violation. Third, both groups found that situational factors had a greater impact on apology strategies than social conditions. Fourth, the degree of burden of decency threat was influenced by closeness. In the same situation, Korean and Chinese college students showed differences in the degree of burden of decency threat according to affinity in the case of what happened. Fifth, even if there was no mistake, Korean students would consider the relationship for apology. However, Chinese students do not apologize much for things they do not think they have done wrong.
