With the development of digital imaging technology, digital photogrammetry has found various engineering applications, such as architecture, automotive and aerospace engineering. Although digital photogrammetry allows the generation of 3D photogrammetric data with high density and resolution, it has not been as popular in construction as it has in other industries. In particular, acquisition and processing of 3D photogrammetric data from digital photogrammetry for construction progress measurement applications is at an early stage, and its feasibility has not been evaluated. The objective of this research is to propose a processing method for progress measurement application by utilizing acquisition of 3D as-built data using photogrammetry technology. For this purpose, a framework consisting of 3D photogrammetric data acquisition, 3D photogrammetric data refinement, and 3D structural components detection is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by evaluating the quality of the processed 3D photogrammetric data with respect to the density. The preliminary experimental result shows that using processed 3D photogrammetric data for advanced and automated construction progress measurement applications is possible. © 2011 ASCE.
