초록
Among many space- denoting words in Korean, an and nay 'inside' and pakk and oy 'outside' are used to refer to the inside and the outside of concrete objects, and the compounds anphakk and nayoy have a number of extended meanings. The purpose of this research is to explore and compare the meanings and uses of anphakk and nayoy through an analysis of a Korean written corpus. First, this research examines frequency of the two compounds, showing that their frequency is almost equal in number. Second, it explores the distribution of meanings of anphakk and nayoy, after examining dictionary definitions of the two compoounds. Third, the present study examines extended meanings of anphakk and nayoy, considering the meanings of an and nay and pakk and oy. Fourth, this research explores extended meanings of the two compounds in terms of conceptual metaphor theory. Based on the analysis of the uses of the two compounds in the corpus, it points out the insufficiency of dictionary definitions in characterizing the meaning and usages of anphakk and nayoy. In sum, this paper claims that the meanings and uses of anphakk and nayoy can best be characterized by analyzing the tokens in a corpus.
