This study examines the evolution of the young hero archetype in the film adaptation of <Creation of the Gods>, with a particular focus on the character development of Nezha, Ji Fa, and Lei Zhenzi. The objective is to explore how the film narrative, while retaining traditional elements, deepens the emotional complexity and personal growth of these heroic figures. In the original <Creation of the Gods> novel, heroes are largely shaped by divine will and authoritative power, adhering to a fatalistic worldview where their actions are primarily dictated by external forces, with little emphasis on individual autonomy. In contrast, the modern film adaptation shifts the focus to internal struggles and personal development, highlighting the emotional depth and agency of the heroes, making their journeys more resonant in a contemporary context. The heroes in <Creation of the Gods> possess multifaceted destinies largely determined by divine forces. While fate influences their paths, many of them challenge and ultimately reshape their destinies through personal struggle and sacrifice, reflecting the interplay between fate and individual effort in accordance with the ‘hero’s journey' narrative structure. In the film adaptation, Nezha's character arc emphasizes rebellion and maturation, illustrating his growing independence and willpower, which aligns with the modern emphasis on inner conflict. Ji Fa’s story portrays his transformation from dissatisfaction with his predetermined role to ultimately embracing the responsibility of his mission, symbolizing the potential for individuals to transcend the limitations of fate and achieve self-realization. Similarly, Lei Zhenzi’s journey, defined by self-awareness and a mission-driven sense of duty, presents him as a hero with distinct personal agency. Through an analysis of these three young heroes, this study reveals how the modern film adaptation not only preserves traditional cultural elements but also enriches its protagonists with greater emotional depth and developmental arcs, thereby enhancing their cultural relevance and significance in the contemporary world.
