Patterns of Social Exclusion and Depression Levels in Older Adults: A Latent Class Analysis

초록

This study aims to examine the relationship between the patterns of social exclusion and depression levels in older adults in South Korea. Using data from the 9th wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (2022), we analyzed a sample of 4,480 individuals aged 65 and older. Latent Class Analysis identified four distinct patterns of social exclusion: income exclusion, social relationship-income exclusion, income-health exclusion, and multiple exclusion. ANOVA and Scheffé post-hoc tests revealed significant differences in depression levels across these patterns, with the multiple exclusion group showing the highest depression levels compared to the income exclusion group. Sociodemographic characteristics, including age, education level, household type, and economic activity, also varied significantly across exclusion patterns. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions that address multidimensional social exclusion, emphasizing comprehensive support strategies rather than single-domain approaches. Findings also underscore the importance of policies aimed at mitigating the adverse mental health effects of social exclusion among older adults.
