This study aims at analyzing the characteristics and aspects of implicative expression from the viewpoint of communication. Numerous studies on implicative expressions have been conducted from the view of pragmatics, but not much research has been done on the way implicative expressions emerge in the actual process of communication and the reason speakers use implicative expressions. In this regard, the study proposes the conditions for implicative expressions to be used, a partial modification of the assertions made by Grice, as follows: cancellability, non-detachable, calculability, nonconventional, indeterminable. This, in turn, was classified into speaker-oriented condition (cancellability), listener-oriented condition (calculability), and content-oriented condition (indeterminable), non-conventional. Such classification is significant in three aspects. First, the development, delivery, and understanding of implication can be examined. Second, the causes for communication troubles can be easily traced when such troubles occur resulting from the lack of understanding on the implications. Third, the distinction between basic conditions and optional conditions can be made. The reasons for speakers using implicative expressions are as follows: “indirect effect of conveying stronger expression by not directly expressing what the speaker wants to say”, “the effect of passing the buck to the other person in the conversation when it is deemed difficult to make a decision concerning a certain fact or difficult for the speaker to take responsibility”, “the effect of conveying the message as well as his /her emotion using implicative expressions”, “the effect of delivering a number of information at one time, usually more information than wanted”, and “the effect of not delivering information clearly intentionally by the speaker”. Each of the aforementioned effect does not work in isolation, but several in combination, in most implicative expressions used in communication.
