의미작용과 정체성에 관한 연구 - 마네의 <올랭피아Olympia>를 중심으로

Manet’s Olympia was severely criticized in the salon exhibition at that time for the fact that the work was obscene and that it did not follow traditional techniques. Foucault’s lecture, also referred to in this paper, reveals in detail about the change in technique. This article attempted to explain the swear words of the viewers on the issue of obscenity in the work and the behavior to damage the work from the viewpoint of identity and signification. Therefore, in the text, the relationship between signification and identity was examined and applied to the public’s reaction to Manet’s Olympia. In the case of semantic action, along with discussions on Barthes’ signification, Baudrillard’s theories were also used. In particular, Baudrillard’s simulation and deterrence strategy theories systematically explain the behavioral patterns of the masses that can be found in various fields of modern society through the mechanism of signification. In this thesis, we saw that the criticism and radical actions that the public struck against Manet’s work, Olympia, were a kind of deterrence strategy to belong to the mainstream bourgeois at the time.
