초록

This paper empirically examines to determine the subjective importance of the IPRs and strategic IP protection methods using STEPI’s 2016 Korean Innovation Survey data base. The empirical results are summarized as followings. First, among IP protection methods, firms rate IPRs as more valuable than strategic IP protection methods. Next, ordered Probit regressions show that the probability that a firm rates IPRs as more valuable than strategic protection methods varies with firm size, firm and industry characteristics. Large and small firms rate IPRs as more valuable than strategic IP protections. However, innobiz and venture companies regarded the IPR more important than strategic protections.Finally, levels of technology in industries can also affect the importance of selecting IP protection methods.Specially, high tech companies rates IPRs including patents as more valuable than strategic protection. The results are relevant to debates over changes to the patent system and the need for policies to encourage small firms to patent more.
