The Process and Background of Queen Jinseong’s Abdication in the Shilla Dynasty

초록

This paper examines the background and meaning of Queen Jinseong's Abdication. It was understood that Queen Jinseong was inevitable mainly due to the confusion of state affairs. However, as a result of the review, the Queen Jinseong's Abdication was interpreted as the intention of King Hyogong, the successor, not Queen Jinseong herself. King Hyogong was the illegitimate child of King Heongang. so he had a problem with the succession to the throne. Therefore, Queen Jinseong tried to justify the succession of King Hyogong, the illegitimate child, through the form of Confucianism called Abdication. Looking at the process of Queen Jinseong's Abdication, It is progressing in the order of successor selection, regent, and succession to the throne. This shows the influence of abdication orthodoxy of Yosun(堯舜), a Confucian ideal monarch. The influence of Confucianism can be seen in Queen Jinseong's Abdication, In this regard, Confucian scholar Choi Chi-won(崔致遠) paid attention. It was understood that Queen Jinseong's Abdication was effective in that the succession of King Hyogong's succession went smoothly, and that there was no record of revolt even after the succession of King Hyogong.
