A Comparative Analysis of AI Security Research Trends in South Korea, the United States, and Japan Using BERTopic

초록

As artificial intelligence (AI) technology advances rapidly, ensuring the stability and reliability of AI systems has become a critical global concern. This study compares the AI security research trends of South Korea, the United States, and Japan to identify each country’s strategic focus. Using BERTopic, a topic modeling method, we analyzed academic abstracts published between 2020 and 2025 to extract key research themes. The analysis adopts a dual perspective of “AI for Security” and “Security of AI” to classify research directions. The United States emphasizes securing foundational technologies and leading global standards, while Japan focuses on the safe integration of AI into social systems. South Korea prioritizes addressing practical security challenges in key industries such as ICT, autonomous vehicles, and healthcare, with a strong focus on rapid deployment. This reflects an “application-driven industrialization” strategy aimed at strengthening industrial security based on national technological strengths. By empirically comparing these national approaches, this study provides meaningful academic and policy insights, particularly by clarifying South Korea’s industrial security-oriented strategy.
