초록
The purpose of this research is to explore the necessary elements that are needed by synchronized swimming judges for a fair judgment. In order to achieve the aim of the research, 5 active judges, who were former synchronized swimmer, were selected as participants of the study. In addition, three more experts were recruited for the study. First, the president of FINA’s synchronized swimming division who is currently holding a professor position in Japan was recruited. Second, a Canadian international judge who are currently holding a professor position in Canada was also recruited and China international judge. The data from in-depth interview and email were collected and coded for data analyses. The data retrieved three necessary elements for a fair decision in synchronized swimming competitions. Frist, abundant experiences as a synchronized swimmer was considered an important criterion for professional judge. In addition, the interviewees indicated that judges needed to constantly study rules and standards that change every four years. Second, judges indicated that they utilize self-reflective process after each evaluation and competition regarding fairness, reliability, and consistency so that they can make their decision better in upcoming competition. Through the interview, the judges recognized the importance of their job and thus, they were trying to improve their quality as judges. Moreover, previous study noted that players and coaches perceived the level of fairness always lower than judges. Thus, in order to ensure the credibility and fairness of the judge, judges are noted to use supplementary tool that can be used as evidence of objective evaluation.
