Social and Cultural Boundaries and Dissolution Appeared in the movies <The Untouchable:1% Friendship> and <The Green Book>

초록

This paper aimed to examine that humans are valuable as existence itself, through the movies, <Untouchable: 1% Friendship> and <Green Book>. The way of their existence in society is determined by the social and cultural boundaries reproduced in these two movies. However, the value of human beings is not determined according to the way of social existence. From this perspective, we investigated the point where the true way of human existence could be found through the dissolution of social and cultural boundaries. Consequently, we looked over our discriminatory gaze toward the disabled and races. It was found through the movie, <Untouchable: 1% Friendship>, that the psychological atrophy of the disabled could be triggered by the perception that the disabled are objects of alienation, prejudice and protection, from theoutside world. In addition, in this movie, the traditional hierarchical structure, which is said to have the superior upper class culture and the inferior lower class culture, is collapsed, and horizontal exchanges between cultures also occur. This shows a scene of cultural power in which social authority, cultural capital, and hierarchical relations work complexly. This highlights an important implication that reveals how much cultural production and value judgment depend on social context and power, and at the same time, encourages critical reflection on how art, social recognition, and authority constitute cultural values. This movie shows this by dismantling those boundaries. The social prejudice and discrimination shown in every scene of this movie, which is based on a true story, is not limited only to Philip, a disabled person. This movie is especially touching in that it moves toward understanding, respect, coexistence, and solidarity among socially vulnerable groups. This movie reveals the true way of human existence in which the disabled and the economically or socially disadvantaged ones rely on and sympathize with each other. The movie <Green Book> dismantles racial, physical, and psychological boundaries. The movie <Green Book> depicts racial discrimination and conflicts in American society during the 1960s. Discrimination means that a barrier of difference, namely, a boundary has been drawn. This appears in various phenomena such as social inequalities, spatial and cultural differences. If these injustices had become customary, discrimination would inevitably be tolerated for generations to come. In the movie <Green Book>, Green Book is a sign that symbolizes the physical and social boundaries of the era of racial discrimination, and at the same time, symbolizes the main character's desire to break down the boundaries. It's because the dissolution of the boundaries is just the freedom and the world of human dignity that the protagonist desires. The movie <Green Book> deals with the prejudices between races, the differences between classes, the understanding of the way of human existence, and friendship. The play revolves around the process that two men, who have lived different lives, understand each other and change, through their journey. In order for the value of diversity to permeate society, it is necessary to cross over and dissolve stereotypes, prejudices, and the social boundaries. When such traversing is possible, social diversity will be diversified. If movies function as stimulants for the formation of cultural value and identity, beyond the category of simple entertainment contents, they can create lifestyles, trends, and a sense of cultural unity of a particular era, and serve as a pathway for understanding and exchanging of diverse cultures.
