A Study on the Activities of the Police and Kodokan Judo Coaches under Japanese Colonial Rule

초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the activities of judo coaches associated with the police under Japanese colonial rule in connection with the situations of the time. About research methods, literatures were analyzed, and advanced studies were quoted. The followings are the results. The rapid growth of judo in Japan formed in distributing and promoting judo in Joseon. Judo coaches did various activities such as judging at competitions, lecturing, and writing to meet the police’s needs for judo while the police provided institutional support related to their activities. This means that the police and the judo coaches were in a mutually cooperative relationship. It also implies that judo was utilized by the police and judo coaches as a means of developing colonial policies favorably. This study is significant in that it will contribute to reviewing the history of Japanese judo’ overseas expansion and reconsidering the history of judo development.
