Changing Patterns of Glass Ceiling Effects in Korea during the Past 30 Years (1986-2016)

초록

Through the quantile decomposition method, this paper investigates the changing patterns of glass ceiling effects in Korea during the past 30 years (1986-2016). Especially, reflecting the labor market structure, we did examine more specific glass ceiling effects by firm size and education level. The main results in this study are as follows. First, we found that glass ceiling effects for all worker in Korea have been disappearing recently, while the effects were serious in the past. Second, from the sectoral and occupational views, glass ceilings are more likely to occur in manufacturing and blue collar jobs which are male-dominated. Finally, female workers with low levels of education and working in small-medium firms have been discriminated in the labor market and continued from the past 30 years despite of the legislation of anti-discrimination acts in 2007 and 2014.
