The Influence of Extrinsic Motivation and Self-esteem on Burnout among Female Dancers

초록

Burnout has been actively studied with the concept of extrinsic motivation in the context of physical activity. Recently, Self-determination theory divided motivation into several categories based on the level of self-regulation(Lonsdale, Hodge, & Rose, 2008). The current study, first conceptualized the burnout which had not been utilized enough in the realm of dance and second, attempted to examine how extrinsic motivation and self-esteem determined the burnout of female highschool dancers. A multiple regression analysis was performed using the data collected from 330 female highschool dancers. Their mean age was 16.63 with the standard deviation of .90. The results indicated that extrinsic motivation ( β = .30, p < .001) and self-esteem (β = -.20, p < .001) of the respondents influenced their burnout as hypothesized. The current study offered a discussion on how extrinsic motivation and self-esteem of female highschool dancers could be used for them not to experience burnout.
