Modeling Spatial Diffusion with Multiple Competing Propagators

초록

In this study, we model the decisions by competing organizations with respect to the location of diffusion agencies and the intensity of diffusion at the chosen sites. We propose that the pattern of spatial diffusion – contagious or hierarchical – is related to the organizational learning strategies of exploitation and exploration. Where the supply of potential locations is limited by infrastructure availability, competition between propagators also plays a key role in the spatial diffusion process. Our empirical study concerns specialist medical practices(i.e. orthopedic surgeons) that establish practice arrangements with rural hospitals outside their home markets between 1989 and 2001. We find the pattern of agency locations over time is more consistent with an exploitation strategy but the intensity of diffusion is subject to both influences. In addition, the presence of a competing propagator in a given market, the origin of that propagator as well as the location of competitors all influence the locations chosen and the level of diffusion intensity.
