A Study on the Use of Transportation Objects in Jia Zhangke’s <Platform (站台)> (2000)

초록

<Platform> is an autobiographical work by Jia Zhangke, a leading director of the sixth generation in China. It contains the social background of Chinese society's transition from a socialist system to a market economy in the 1980s. The dreams, wanderings, hopes, and frustrations of young people who grew up during this period are one of the main themes contained in the film. In order to vividly convey this creative purpose through the screen, Jia Zhangke introduced various transportation objects such as bicycles, tractors, trucks, buses, and trains as the work mise-en-scène. These means of transportation are both a means of transportation for the main characters in the movie and a means of visualizing their inner selves, as well as a symbol of the times and a symbol of the fate of the main characters. Bicycles are a symbol of the main character's love and friendship, pickup trucks are a symbol of their curved growth process, and trains are a symbol of infinite expectations and admiration for their future and the outside world. The rational use of transportation objects improved the vitality and mobility of works and frames and provided the audience with richer visual elements. A deep insight into the genre identity of movies that can vividly reproduce the movement of objects is a fundamental factor in Jia Zhangke's active use of transportation objects in movie scenes.
