Journalists’ Perceptions of Newspapers’ Digital News Subscription Strategies in Korea

초록

This study was conducted to explore the potential and challenges of the digital news paywall or subscription strategy currently being pursued by Korean newspaper companies. To achieve this, the study conducted in-depth interviews with current journalists implementing digital strategies to gauge their perceptions. The results revealed that portal-centric news distribution and consumption structures were frequently cited as a challenge facing the changing digital landscape, with concerns raised about the resulting decline in news quality and trust. All journalists interviewed agreed with the direction of the digital news paywall strategy, given that the limitations of the print-centric revenue model in the digital environment are creating a financial crisis for newspaper companies. They recognized that for digital news paywalls to succeed, they needed to move beyond the portal-centric news structure, strengthen their own platforms, and adopt a strategy for news differentiation. Furthermore, it was suggested that changes in news production organizations are urgently needed to support digital innovation, including paid news.
