The Awakening of Intellectual Writers and the Transformation of Folk Narratives - Study of Park Tae-soon’s ‘The People of Oechon-dong’ series

초록

Novelist Park Tae-soon published a series of novels, The People of Oechon-dong, between 1966 and 1973. This article examines how Park’s “The People of Oechon-dong” portrayed the Korean “urban folk” from the mid-to-late 1960s to the 1970s. This study empirically cataloged 16 episodes of the “The People of Oechon-dong” series. Some of them were also inferentially sequenced. The significance of this cataloging is that it shows how the world of Park Tae-soon’s novels changed between 1966 and 1973 as a result of a cognitive shock. Park’s literary journey during this period can be understood as a narrative of discovering the people, reaching out to the people, and becoming the people. Park Tae-soon’s ‘People of Oechon-dong’ series empirically reveals the specific space of Nangok in Sillim-dong. Through this, we discussed how the modernization of Seoul’s urban space was achieved through the colonization of the city’s periphery. It is also significant that ‘The People of Oechon-dong’ is a valuable example of literary capture of Seoul’s transformation along with the transformation of the global metropolis.
