초록

Queen Jinseong was a Queen of the Shilla Kingdom around the 9th century. Queen Jinseong has emerged as a popular figure in contemporary popular histories such as novels, movies, musicals and so on. However these recent popular accounts highlight only the sexuality of Queen Jinseong as a woman pursuing her sexual desires, and excludes any focus on the nature of her rule. This is partly due to the fact that Queen Jinseong has not drawn great attention as the object of historical study, and she does not greatly feature in academic works. History is the image of the past that contemporary people accept. The image of the past is never stable or complete, and so there is a need to continue reevaluating historical events through historical studies and present new interpretations of historical figures. In this sense Queen Jinseong has been neglected by historians. In popular accounts her personality dominates. But because the historical research into her life and times has been meagre, it has been difficult to develop a full picture of her rule. Therefore, there is a need to make a meaningful interpretation and reproduction of Queen Jinseong based upon historical research.
