A study on the comprehensibility of Korean speakers’ English utterances and affecting factors for native and non-native English listeners

초록

With increasing communication among non-native English speakers, this study investigated how Korean speakers’ English utterances are perceived and understood by non-native English speakers (NNESs) and what factors affect their listening comprehension in comparison with native English speakers (NESs). 22 NESs and 26 NNESs listened to five Korean speakers’ English passages and evaluated their comprehensibility on 10-point scales. The results showed that the two groups overall agreed on the relative comprehensibility of the five passages and their comprehensibility was mostly affected by pronunciation and stammering/pauses. Yet, for some Korean speakers' passages NNESs showed significantly lower comprehensibility than NESs, indicating that they were more negatively influenced by Koreanized pronunciation, speech rate, and non-linguisitic factors than NESs.
