The Effect of Nationality of Foreign Residents on Fear of Crime for Local Residents

초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of the nationality of various foreign residents on fear of crime for local residents using ordered logistic model. As a result, the proportion of foreigners is found to be an important factor for increasing the fear of crime. However, the influence of fear of crime is found to be discriminatory by foreign nationalities. In the case of Western Europeans and Americans, they are not negative for the fear of crime, while the percentage of foreigners from Eastern Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia, East Asia and Central Asia is positive for the Fear of crime. This result is presumed to be mainly caused by the preference of white people formed in Western Europe and North America, and excessive expansion of negative criminal behavior of some foreigners. However, such perception of local residents is different from the actual crime rate. These results confirm that there is a multidimensional complexity in the Korean society against the antipathy toward foreigners and the fear of crime not by actual crime but by the originality and race. Therefore, it is important for the national efforts to prevent negative recognition or stigmatization of certain alien groups.
