초록
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of subjective time progression, which is when time seems to pass more quickly than it actually is, on time distortion and arousal level in individuals with social anxiety. Both high and low social anxiety groups were randomly assigned to either time-drags (being told for 3 minutes) or time-flies conditions (being told for 7 minutes) during an oral presentation, while the level of anxiety and time distortion was measured using the skin conductance level (SCL) based on phases (baseline (2 min), exposure (5 min), and recovery (3 min) and self-report questionnaires (felt time progress, evaluation of performance, anxiety-state). The results showed that individuals with high social anxiety in the time-flies situation had significantly decreased SCL during the recovery phase, as compared to the exposure phase. These results suggest that fast time progression could help to reduce arousal level from social situations by decreasing time distortion in individuals with social anxiety.
