Birth order and personality as predictors of adolescents' academic achievement

초록

This study examined the role of birth order and the Big Five personality traits as predictors of adolescents' academic achievement. Of the 285 middle school students, 221 completed and returned the demographic questionnaire and the NEO Personality Assessment System(NEO-PAS) for adolescents yielding a total response rate of 77.54%. The final sample consisted of 111 males(50.23%) and 110 females(49.77%). Their average age was 13.94 years. Measures of the NEO-PAS, demographic characteristics, and school achievement were obtained. Pearson's correlations indicated that school achievement was positively associated with conscientiousness and openness to experience, whereas it was negatively associated with birth order and neuroticism. It was observed that there were birth order differences in academic achievement and openness to experience. Firstborns had higher academic achievement and openness to experience than laterborns. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that birth order and conscientiousness predicted the adolescents' academic achievement. Moreover, mediational analysis indicated that openness to experience mediated the relationship between birth order and academic achievement.
