The effects of children’s emotionality on smart media use: The moderating role of maternal smart media mediation

초록

This study examined the moderating effect of maternal smart media mediation on the relationship between children’s emotionality and their smart media use. The participants were 191 mothers of children aged 3-5 years residing in Seoul. Data were collected through an online survey using Google Forms, and the responses were analyzed using SPSS 27.0, including descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis with the Process macro (Model 1). The results of the correlation analysis showed that children's smart media use was positively correlated with their emotionality, and negatively correlated with all subfactors of maternal smart media mediation, except for salience. Regression analysis revealed a significant moderating effect of maternal smart media mediation on the relationship between children’s emotionality and smart media use. Specifically, higher levels of maternal mediation weakened the influence of children’s negative emotionality on excessive smart media use. These findings suggest that maternal smart media mediation is a practical and modifiable factor that can buffer the effects of children's emotionality on their media behavior. This study has meaningful implications for developing effective strategies tailored to children’s temperamental traits to guide appropriate smart media use.
