Conflict Management and Perception Regarding College Students’ Team Projects

초록

The purpose of this study is to identify conflict management mechanisms used by college students involved in team projects. The reason colleges implement team projects is to instill in students a heightened sense of independence in the learning environment, remove any anxieties related to social interaction and communication, and to push the boundaries of individual thought through such interactions, thereby producing a synergy effect. In reality, however, students’ attitudes toward team projects are often more negative than encouraging. This study sought to identify students’ conflict management methods and their perception of team projects by investigating the manner in which they solved conflicts. It was found that the preferred coping mechanism was the direct approach of detailed distribution of work among members, and outspoken warnings against one another. The most effective forms of conflict management were found to be the inclusion of individual team member assessments, straightforward discussion, and even dismissal from the group to eliminate the possibility of any one member failing to contribute to the project, which are all methods that do not consider teamwork. In effect, this result proved that team project members do not necessarily seek teamwork or to join in a collected group effort for projects, failing to produce the synergy effect that the team project notion strives for. Unlike many studies that value the efficiency of process-result methods, this particular study is significant in that it sought to identify students’ perceptions.
