조기천 시 연구 ― 구소련에서의 문학 활동을 중심으로

The purpose of this study is to determine the literary output of Jo Gicheon as precisely as possible by examining his literary activity in the Soviet Union. Born in the Maritime Province of Siberia, in the Soviet Union, Jo published a total of 15 works during the Soviet era and developed literary activities. His poems are about socialist construction, the national liberation of colonial Korea, and assimilation into the Soviet Union. In poetry criticism, he valued the use of poetic diction and rhythms, the shape of a poem, and the substantiation of emotion. In addition, examining Jo’s reviews of plays in which he showed great interest reveals that he was well acquainted with Soviet literature, which helped him rise to the top of the literary world in North Korea shortly after liberation. Jo placed a great emphasis on the use of tone and popular language (reflected in many of his works) and the creation of a typical individual figure with social significance, which he praised in his fiction criticism. He also created such a character in his epic poem “Baekdu Mountain.” Judging from his experiences with composing novels of his own in the Soviet Union and the fact that he devoted himself to stage and fiction criticism, Jo’s understanding of poetry seems to be based on his understanding of prose rather than poetry.
