초록
Previous studies have consistently reported that empathy plays a key role in driving pro-social behaviors such as donations. However, recent studies have suggested that empathy may not always play a positive role, especially in situations that require repeated empathy, and that empathy fatigue may play a negative role in pro-social behavior. In this study, we examined the effects of empathy fatigue on donation intention and donation amount in response to a public ad. We also explored whether the effect of empathy fatigue varies depending on which emotion (negative vs. positive) is being empathized with. The results showed that empathy fatigue interacted with emotion orientation to have different effects on donation intention and donation amount. Intention to donate was highest among those who were exposed to negative emotions but had low empathy fatigue. In contrast, donation amount was highest among those who repeatedly empathized with negative emotions and had high empathy fatigue. These results suggest that there may be differences in the pro-social behaviors found in situations of high and low empathy fatigue.
