실전 전투사례 분석을 통한 정신전력 구성 요인 재정립 방안

초록

This study examines the factors that generate a strong will to fight through case analyses of units and individuals who achieved success in modern combat, including the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the First Battle of Yeonpyeong and Second Battle of Yeonpyeong. The analysis identifies key factors influencing battlefield success at both the individual and unit levels. At the individual level, critical elements include responsibility, courage, belief in victory, and a steadfast refusal to yield in combat. At the unit level, decisive factors include military discipline, cohesion, morale, and unit pride. Based on these findings, this study proposes a revised conceptual framework for what is termed “mental power.” In addition, foundational values necessary for the effective expression of these elements; patriotism, perception of the enemy, honor, and loyalty are identified as underlying components. The study further establishes linkages between the core components of mental power and the broader value system of military ethos. This empirically grounded framework provides several contributions. First, it integrates previously fragmented elements of military values into a coherent structure, enabling more systematic education and training. Second, it clarifies the characteristics of each component, allowing for differentiated instruction based on training stages and content. Third, it enables the identification of sub-components and core competencies associated with each element. Finally, it proposes criteria for the objective assessment of mental power by operationalizing its components into measurable competencies. These findings, derived from historical combat cases, offer practical relevance for strengthening the intangible dimensions of combat effectiveness and enhancing the design of military education and training programs.
