The Effect of Oral Care with Benzydamine Hydrochloride Solution in Patients at Neurological Intensive Care Unit

초록

This study was designed as a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest to investigate whether there are differences between two oral care solution on participants' halitosis, hydrogen exponent and oral status. 28 subjects in the experimental group using benzydamine hydrochloride solution and 29 subjects in the control group using 0.1% chlorhexidine received oral care three time/day for 5 days. Data collected were analyzed with chi-squared test, Fisher’s exact test, t-test, and ANCOVA using SPSS 25.0 software. The results showed halitosis of experimental group to which benzydamine hydrochloride solution was applied reduced more, showing statistically significant difference(F=19.42, p<.001). Hydrogen exponent of experimental group increased more, showing statistically significant difference(F=4.73, p=.034). There were no significant differences between the two groups for tongue(F=0.45, p=.502), oral mucosa(F=1.92 p=.168), gum(F=1.31, p=.257), and teeth(F=1.63, p=.207). This study showed that oral care using benzydamine hydrochloride solution partially effectively used to improve the oral health of neurological ICU patients
