초록
As the field of craft design continues to evolve, there is increasing emphasis on approaches that move beyond conventional expressions centered on form or material. In particular, fusion-oriented trends such as crossover have created a need for strategies that can intuitively communicate emotional content and symbolic meaning. The high-concept design strategy offers a viable approach for craft product development, enabling designers to distill layered cultural narratives into clear, symbolic, and emotionally resonant visual forms. This study presents a case in which the high-concept strategy is applied to the development of a tableware item rooted in Korean tradition. The ddeotbak, a traditional measuring vessel, is reinterpreted in relation to makgeolli (Korean rice wine) culture, with the image of rice heaped in a bowl serving as the central motif. This visual metaphor symbolically reflects cultural values such as warmth and jeong (affection or gratuitous kindness), which are deeply embedded in Korean sensibility. The final product, named Ddeotbak Makgeolli Cup Soboki, was developed as an emotional craft item using high-concept principles to clarify its cultural and design intentions. Through this case, the study demonstrates the design potential and scalability of high-concept approaches in tableware, and offers foundational insights for exploring future linkages with regional craft industries and cultural tourism content.
