A Preliminary Study of Program Development to Enhance Mentalization in Novice Counselors: Insights from Expert Interviews

초록

Objectives: This study aimed to provide foundational data for developing a mentalization enhancement program for novice counselors. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 experts, each with over 10 years of supervision experience and expertise in mentalization theory. Data were analyzed using Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR). Results: Core themes reflecting the difficulties of novice counselors were identified as failure to focus on client, self-doubt and evaluation anxiety, and lack of understanding counseling essence, which converged into self-centered rigidity and immature understanding of counseling essence. Self-mentalization ranked highest in developmental priority, followed by other-mentalization, affective mentalization, and relational mentalization. ‘Affect focus’ and ‘not-knowing stance’ were identified as essential competencies, and a spiral learning framework of self-other-relational-integration was derived. Experts recommended 8-10 weekly sessions with 6-8 participants, emphasizing experiential activities and mock counseling. For the Korean cultural context, creating safe learning environments, facilitating emotional expression, and reflecting on Korean cultural values were highlighted as key considerations. Conclusions: These findings offer implications for designing mentalization enhancement curricula for novice counselors.
