A Semantic Network Analysis of Listening Obstacle Factors

초록

This study examined how Korean adults perceive many factors that hinder listening comprehension. Open surveys were conducted on two groups—university students and workers—and the epistemological structures of each were compared using semantic network analysis. On the sentence “I don’t or can’t listen to what others say,” the two groups singled out “story” as the most important factor. On “a situation where it’s difficult to listen to what others say,” “story” was also the most frequent factor, and it was the word that demonstrated the greatest amount of closeness centrality. “The other,” “opinion,” and “thought,” (in that order), claimed a central position in the network. On factors that hinder listening, the two groups both identified “the other,” “story,” and “thought” as important words, while only the group of university students deemed “interest,” “pronunciation,” “repetition,” and “emotion,” as significant. This study will contribute to re-examining the many factors that influence listening, and will help in the development of listening programs.
