In this paper, we have investigated a vertically mounted stripline-fed patch antenna in which the feed and radiating elements are formed on the same or opposite sides of a substrate. Such an antenna not only achieves broadband characteristics, but also allows easy replacement in a plug-and-play configuration. Detailed design theories and methods for vertically mounted stripline feed and patch were proposed, and based on these, an antenna operating at 5.8 GHz was designed and fabricated. Measurement results showed a bandwidth of 551 MHz (9.5 % ), a gain of 9.22 dBi, and beamwidths of 56.9 degrees and 89.8 degrees in the E- and H-planes, respectively. Next, studies on the design of the array were performed. First, the radiation resistance and the E- and H-planes mutual coupling characteristics were investigated with the relevant structure parameters. Based on these results, a 1 x 4 series-fed antenna array with 20 dB sidelobe characteristics was designed and fabricated. The measured results for return loss and E- and H-planes radiation patterns showed an operating bandwidth of 953 MHz (16.43 % ), a gain of 13.2 dBi, and beamwidths of 19.7 degrees and 84.1 degrees in the E- and H-planes, respectively. These results were found to be in good agreement with simulations. The overall measurement results fully validate the design theory and the usefulness of the antenna configuration. Therefore, the vertically mounted stripline-fed patch antenna array can be easily applied to wireless communication and radar fields.
