It has been known that the snail slime contains many beneficial ingredients for the skin regeneration. Therefore, we investigated the effects of snail slime in reconstruction of skin equivalent (SE). The study was designed to see if snail slime has any effect on the formation of epidermal basement membrane when it was used for the dermal substitute. First, the combined effect of snail slime and Cervi cornus Colla (CCC) in SE reconstruction was observed. The epidermal thickness of snail slime and CCC model was not significantly different from the control model. The expression of vimentin was slightly higher in snail slime model but other markers had no obvious differences. Next, we examined the snail slime in SE reconstruction without CCC to see the effect of snail slime alone. There was no apparent changes in the thickness of the epidermis. Instead, the adhesion between the cells were not tight enough so the cells in basal layer were dispersed. Our study concludes that there is no synergistic effect of snail slime and CCC in SE reconstruction. Even more there was an unhelpful effect on the formation of the basement membrane in SE reconstruction when snail slime was used alone. The result of this study is different from the effect of snail slime already reported, therefore further study is required.
