Development of a BIM-based Automated Safety Factor Verification System for Breakwater Structures Based on Design Standard for Port and Fishing Port Facilities

초록

This paper presents an automated safety-factor evaluation tool for vertical caisson breakwaters, developed using Autodesk Revit, Dynamo, and Python. Although the Korean Design Standard KDS 64 00 00:2024 specifies minimum safety factors for sliding and overturning, these checks are still commonly performed using Excel-based manual workflows in domestic port-design practice. To address this limitation, a parametric Revit family was developed with 25 geometric and design input parameters. These parameters are transferred through Dynamo to a Python routine that implements Goda’s wave pressure theory and the safety-check procedures. Seven computed results are then returned to Revit as dedicated output parameters. Buoyancy is incorporated directly into the self-weight calculation by assigning separate unit weights to the above- and below-water portions of concrete and filling materials. The tool was validated using a caisson section previously designed through a conventional process for Port OO. The case-study caisson is 23.4 m wide, 38.4 m long, and 23.0 m high, located at a water depth of 21.7 m and subjected to a design wave height of 7.5 m. The automated workflow produced safety factors of 1.314 for sliding and 1.749 for overturning, both exceeding the required minimum value of 1.2. Compared with the original Excel-based values of 1.27 and 2.32, the sliding safety factor showed close agreement, with a difference of approximately 3.5%. The results indicate that the proposed BIM-integrated tool can automate repetitive stability checks and provide near-real-time feedback within one to two seconds after parameter modification. As the present validation is based on a single case, the study confirms the feasibility of migrating the manual review into a BIM environment at a proof-of-concept level, and broader validation across multiple sections remains future work.
