Zhuāngzǐ (莊子) and Chán(禪) thought pursue ‘Dao(道)’ to the ultimate. ‘Dao(道)’ is a kind of artistic sprit and implies abundant aesthetic principle. The artistic spirit of the East is closely related to Dao, the ultimate stage of life, and the essence of Dao is exposed obviously in Zhuāngzǐ and Chán thought. Regardless of any genre, art is expressed in concrete form, action and language, but the form, action and language have its own ‘symbol’ and ‘meaning’. The ‘symbol’ needs to have the artistic spirit to be given artistic value. The artistic spirit of the East is finally concluded to ‘Tao’. So we need to understand Zhuāngzǐ of Taoism and Chán of Buddhism to comprehend Oriental art in depth. In this paper the writer examined the state or mental world of ‘Dao’ to understand Oriental art in depth and tried to figure out the artistic spirit in Zhuāngzǐ and Chán. To attain this end, first the writer made clear the meaning of ‘Dao’ in Zhuāngzǐ and Chán with reference to Oriental art. And the writer analyzed the common point and difference of artistic spirit in Zhuāngzǐ and Chán.
