Characteristics of Vocabulary Found in Popular Song Lyrics and Emotional Expression of the Japanese People -Focusing on Chronological Changes-

초록

In this article, we analyzed the characteristics of vocabulary found in the lyrics of popular Japanese songs and examine how the emotional expressions of the Japanese people have changed over time. We extracted nouns and adjectives with a high frequencies of occurrence from songs that ranked 10th on the Oricon chart from 1970 to 2009 and analyzed changes by age. In all ages, nouns such as ai, yume and kokoro and adjectives such as suki and yasashi were found to be frequently used. In the case of nouns, words expressing feelings tend to be maintained in all ages, while words related to people and tools tend to disappear over time. In the case of adjectives, emotional adjectives appear with high frequency in all ages, and the tendency of emotional adjectives to appear changes positively and negatively over time. These trends reflect the social and economic background of Japan. However, it appears that popular psychology manifests itself contrary to economic conditions, as reflected in such phenomena as a predominance of negative emotions during economic boom and of positive emotions in times of recession.
