A Computational Model of Repair Structure in Discourse Anaylsis

This paper presents the possible knowledge representation on repair that occurs between a human and the computer, using the frame based approach that is originally proposed by Minsky (1979). The term repair refers to efforts by a speaker and a hearer to correct trouble spots in conversation. Repair has been extensively studied not only in discourse analysis and but also in artificial intelligence, especially, human computer interaction area to establish the foundation of a computer model for human users. This paper suggests the answers to questions of how we recognize a repair and how we detect the repair source. Three interdependent frames that are proposed for the computational model are following: a general management frame to control conversation movement, an expectation frame to generate questions, and a repair recognition component to recognize the repair initiation and to specify the repairable source.
