한국어 번역 투의 기능과 의미 고찰 ― 글쓰기 논저에서의 번역 투 검토를 중심으로 ―
초록
In this study, the function and meaning of translationese in thesis writing is examined to find an answer to the question “why do we use translationese?” First, the most common instances of translationese are reviewed by examining research papers, writing textbooks, and popular books on writing. University writing textbooks only briefly mention translationese as opposed to popular books on writing which deal with the issue more extensively, and research papers on college-level writing which show the reality of translationese with real-life examples from college students. Second, the different recommendations for the correction of translationese in these works are divided into six types and the following concrete examples are examined according to the frequency with which they are addressed: double passives, passives and causatives, English prepositions, Japanese particles and postpositions, and English tenses. Both the examples of translationese and the suggested corrections within the literature are then reviewed. Based on the discussion above, it was found that the function and meaning of translationese should be considered foremost, at least in writing education, rather than simply questioning its origins (for example, Japanese or English) and deeming its use a problem. As the function and meaning of translationese can be analyzed through concepts borrowed from Korean studies, such approaches must be taken in regard to writing education, and translationese should be explained in relation to its context and the genre of the writing it appears in.
