The purpose of this study is to analyze impacts of residential environment on foreign immigrant’s residential location choice and to see if impacts are varied by immigrant’s nationality. For this purpose, factors influencing residential location choice were selected based on extensive literature review and the spatial econometrics model was used for analysis. Spatial scope of the study was set to Seoul and data were collected at the ‘Dong’ level, the smallest administrative unit in Seoul. Findings of the study are as follows. First, various factors of residential environment such as foreign aid related facilities, number of manufacturing workers, average apartment price were analyzed as influential factors affecting immigrants’ residential location choice. Second, when classified by nationality, impact of residential environment was different by their origin. Foreign aid center affects most positively Chinese immigrants while negatively affects Japanese immigrants. Number of manufacturing workers are positively related to Chinese and South-eastern immigrants and negatively affect American and European immigrants. Average price of apartment positively affect European immigrants while negatively influence immigrants from Japan, China, and South-eastern countries. Based on these findings, several policy implications and suggestions were made with regard to improvement of residential environments, necessity of further research on this issue, and changes in perception and attitude towards foreign immigrants.
