Limitations of the Speaker Meaning Approach to Conceptual Engineering

초록

Conceptual engineering, a concept widely discussed as a new philosophical methodology, often faces the so-called externalist challenge, which claims it conflicts with metasemantic externalism. In response to this challenge, M. Pinder argues that if one adopts a speaker meaning approach to conceptual engineering, the two become compatible because conceptual engineering operates at the level of speaker meaning, while metasemantic externalism operates at the level of semantic meaning. In this paper, the authors argue that Pinder's claim cannot be justified. If the authors' argument is correct, the speaker meaning approach to conceptual engineering either does not have the character Pinder envisions or is impossible.
