The Han(漢) dynasty had been stabilized through the Emperor Wen(文) and the Emperor Jing(景)’s era. The Emperor Wu(武) who succeeded them, had an strong strategy for ruling his empire. At that time, the officials enforced the law according to the young emperor’s will. For this reason, people had to live a hardscrabble life. Sima Qian(司馬遷), a historian who lived during the reign of the Emperor Wu recorded biographies of that government officials. The purpose of writing these biographies is to historically expose and condemn the evils caused by their rule. He intentionally highlighted the official’s misdeeds. At the same time, he criticized the Emperor who controlled the situation behind them. During the traditional era of China, it was almost impossible to denounce an emperor in public. For this reason, Sima Qian hid his criticism between the lines. To find out his hidden intents through careful reading is the purpose of this thesis.
