A Study on the Characteristics of Minimalist Cosmetic Packaging for Sustainability in the Cosmetic Industry

초록

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of sustainable packaging design in the cosmetic industry based on the formative principles of minimalist design and to identify its practical implications and strategic potential. To achieve this, first, the study examines the concept and formative characteristics of minimalist design and establishes a theoretical foundation from the perspective of sustainability. Second, it derives the specific strategies and visual expressions applied in minimalist packaging through case studies of domestic and global cosmetic brands. Third, it analyzes the interrelationship between the formative principles of minimalism-simplicity, repetition, objecthood, and clarity-and sustainability elements such as material sustainability, recyclability, and biodegradability, in order to empirically verify the effectiveness of minimalist packaging design as a strategy for realizing sustainability. A combined methodology of literature review and case analysis was employed. The case subjects included global brands such as Lush, Kiehl’s, and Aveda, as well as Korean brands such as Innisfree, Toun28, and Aromatica. The analysis revealed that these brands implement strategies such as minimizing plastic use, adopting mono-material packaging, introducing refill systems, promoting empty-container return campaigns, and developing solid-form products. These practices are organically linked to the formative principles of minimalist design and contribute to resource circulation and the reduction of environmental burden. While global brands focus on the development of bio-based materials and the establishment of proprietary recycling systems, domestic brands actively adopt consumer-engaged strategies based on enhanced recyclability, such as container collection and refill station operations. In delivering sustainability messages, global brands tend to emphasize campaign-based communication, whereas domestic brands prioritize intuitive on-package information. In conclusion, this study empirically demonstrates that minimalist design functions as an effective strategy for realizing environmental sustainability beyond its aesthetic principles. The findings are expected to serve as a foundational resource for establishing sustainable packaging design strategies within the cosmetic industry.
