文集百首における定家の和歌 Monjuhyakushu and Teika‘s Waka

Teika’s love of reciting Chinese poetry and attempts of re-articulating Waka from his youth can be seen as an experiment of the new art of expressing or expansion of the state of poetic taste. More specifically, Teika thought the poems by Po Chü-i as valuable materials that awaken the duties of human beings and provision of nature. Monjuhyakushu is a collection of one hundred Waka songs which were based on one hundred title phrases of Po Chü-i’s poems selected by Jinen. Teika also wrote Waka based on Jinen’s one hundred titles. However, 17 phrases of Teika’s were found different from Jine’s from the fact that Teika adopted only part of the titles for combined phrases with rhyming couplets or included his own as well as Jinen’s titles. Further to which, Teika wrote Waka with conjugating appropriate words from the whole Chinese poetry. In this way, Teika took advantage of not only Japanese Monogatari but also Chinese poetry in order to expand Waka’s method of expression, words and poetic flavor.
